Current cold temperatures, high winds and blowing snow are creating driving challenges for all motorists.
Dry, powdery snow whipped up by winds or passing vehicles can create near white-out conditions, making it extremely difficult to see the roadway, signage, vehicles ahead or oncoming traffic. Limited visibility and blowing snow that masks icy road surfaces have contributed to numerous crashes and a few road closures over the past couple weeks on Interstate 84 and other routes in Eastern and Central Oregon.
The powdery white stuff may be great for skiers on the slopes, but on the highway it can be a severe hazard. When the wind is not moving it across the travel lanes, vehicles passing other travelers can stir up a cloud of snow that is near blinding for motorists behind them. On highways with only one lane for each direction, this sudden wall of white can be extra treacherous.
Travelers are reminded to take extra care when passing other vehicles and to be mindful of the impact of blowing snow.
- Be patient.
- Don’t attempt to pass if the cloud of snow you may create will result in a safety hazard to others.
- Slow Down. Excessive speed for conditions of the roadway is a primary cause of crashes.
- Be aware that low blowing snow that covers the roadway may be hiding ice, snow and slippery surfaces.
- Imagine that your family members or friends are in the vehicles ahead and behind, then drive accordingly.
- Don’t take chances.
