Twenty Umatilla County Search and Rescue (SAR) volunteers spent Saturday morning hiking at Grecian Heights Park in Pendleton as part of a physical fitness test.
The physical fitness testing is one of the core competencies they are required to pass for SAR operations.
The physical fitness test included carrying a “moderate” pack that weighs about 20 pounds, containing survival and first aid gear. Other required training that volunteers must be pass includes first aid, land navigation, clue awareness and radio communications.
There are a total of nine core competencies required by the state of Oregon. For more information about Search and Rescue or to volunteer, call Sgt. Dwight Johnson at 541-966-3611 or visit the SAR webpage.
