Wayne E. Rietmann of Ione died on March 22, 2021 in Hermiston at the age of 83.
He was born on May 13, 1937 in Hood River.
Wayne was raised and attended schools in Ione, graduating from Ione High School in the class of 1956. He then attended the Oregon Institute of Technology in Klamath Falls, where he earned his certificate in auto mechanics. Wayne then served in the United States Army from 1960 to 1962 when he was honorably discharged, and he returned to Ione to continue farming the family farm. He was united in marriage to Vera Lou Smith on Oct. 28, 1972 in The Dalles.
Wayne was an active member of the American Legion, was a volunteer fireman, served on the fire district board, and spearheaded the Fourth of July fireworks show for many years. He enjoyed reading, going to the coast, gardening, and growing pumpkins to take to school for the kids. Wayne cherished spending time with his grandchildren. He is survived by his sons, Ed Rietmann (Becky), Ione and Len Rietmann (Karin), Pendleton; brother, Harold Rietmann; sister, Juliana Frink; grandchildren, Kalvin, Keltie, Kinasyn, Konleigh, Jonathan, Liberty and Micah; and numerous nieces and nephews. Wayne was preceded in death by his wife, Vera and his parents, David and Lucile.
A private family celebration will be held.
