Rob McIntyre, band director at Weston-McEwen High School, has spent 24 years at the helm of the school’s Pipes and Drums group.

On Friday, Feb. 9, McIntyre will play his final half-time show directing this group. This is the 74th half-time show for the school and will happen during the boys’ basketball game.

When McIntyre became a teacher in the Athena-Weston School District, it took him two years to learn how to play the bagpipes.

During his teaching career, McIntyre took groups on six trips to share their music. A total of 300 students and 106 chaperones participated in these trips to Boston, New York, Scotland, Vancouver, B.C., and Washington, D.C.

After retiring from teaching, McIntyre said he intends to remain involved in the community at Gem Theatre and with the Pipes and Drums if that works out.

“My career here was uniquely rewarding but never easy. I am looking forward to reducing stress somewhat and getting reacquainted with my fishing pole,” McIntyre said.
