Nanette May “Nan” Schock of Irrigon unexpectantly passed away in Kennewick, Wash. on May 16, 2025 at the age of 61.

Nan was born on Nov. 6, 1963 in Baker City. She was the daughter of Bob and Dorothy McBroom.

Nan grew up in Baker City and Haines, graduating with the class of 1982 from Baker High School. She married Avery Schock in Baker City on Jan. 15, 1982 before he shipped off to Germany for their first duty station. Nan loved nothing more than being a military spouse, getting to travel around the world holding down the fort raising her two boys. They lived in Germany, Fort Lewis, Wash., Fort Polk, La. and several other locations during his career. In 1992 the couple returned to Baker City, where they welcomed their daughter before moving to Vancouver, Wash. in the mid-1990s. In 1999 the couple ventured back to Eastern Oregon, where they lived in Boardman before finding their dream property in Irrigon, where they have remained for the past 17 years.

Nan was always devoted to staying home and raising her children until they enrolled into school, then she took a position working at Subaru in Vancouver, Wash. as a parts manager. After moving to Eastern Oregon, she worked as a baker/cake decorator at Safeway in Hermiston before accepting a position with the Intermountain ESD as an educational assistant in 2004. In 2016 Nan became a food service team member with the Umatilla School District. She currently worked as a kitchen coordinator serving “little critters” at the McNary Elementary School.

Nan loved beach combing, collecting shells and checking out lighthouses. She loved going to the mountains to camp and fishing on the Columbia River. Nan loved spending time with her family and friends, but none was more important than her grandchildren, who she loved very much.

She is survived by her husband of 44 years, Avery Schock; two sons, Brian Schock (Cara) and Jesse Schock (Ashley); daughter, Ariel Estrada (Anthony); five grandchildren; three sisters, Diana Griffin (Jim), Carol Kleeb (Jack) and Kathy Hottle; brother, Russ Backlund (Julie); and many nieces, nephews and extended family members.

She was preceded in death by grandparents, Joe and Ada McBroom and Bill and Katie Saul; father, Bob McBroom; step-father, Dorrell Spence; and mother, Dorothy Spence.

A celebration of life will be announced at a later time.

Burns Mortuary of Hermiston is in care of arrangements.

  1. I’m so sorry for your loss. Aunt Dot was a favorite aunt when I was growing up (unless she was brushing my hair into a ponytail! LOL) She had a great personality and was a lot of fun to be around. I’m sure she will be sorely missed by many.
