CASCADE LOCKS, Ore.-Lampreypalooza, a family-friendly celebration of the cultural importance of Pacific lamprey, is set for July 9 at Bonneville Dam.

The free event hosted by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers (USACE) and the Columbia River Inter-Tribal Fish Commission (CRITFC) is open to the public and will feature science, storytelling and the opportunity to see one of the Northwest’s ancient fish species up close.

The lamprey has survived hundreds of millions of years and is culturally significant to Tribal Nations as an integral part of the Columbia River Basin’s food web, according to a USACE press release on the event.

Representatives from the Confederated Tribes of the Umatilla Indian Reservation (CTUIR) will speak on ongoing lamprey recovery efforts at the all-day event, and CRITFC members will conduct a holding tank demonstration and lamprey tapping methods.
