HERMISTON, Ore.-The next meeting of Good Shepherd Health Care System’s (GSHCS) Ostomy Support Group is scheduled for September 16 from 5:30-6:30 p.m.

The free support group, started by Chelsie Cunningham, BSN, RN, WCC, OMS, and Ateusa Salemi, BSN, RN, CWS with the GSHCS Treatment Center, meets three times a year and allows those with ostomies to share experiences, gain insight and form supportive friendships.

“We organized the ostomy support group to provide a space for individuals with ostomies, or for caregivers of those with ostomies, to come and be able to connect with others and talk about any barriers they are having related to their ostomies,” said Chelsie Cunningham, BSN RN WCC OMS with the GSHCS Treatment Center.

An ostomy is a surgical operation that helps the body remove waste by bypassing the intestinal or urinary tract, diverting it to a new opening in the patient’s abdomen, according to the Cleveland Clinic.

Anyone living with an ostomy, which can be temporary or permanent, depending on the need for surgery, is encouraged to attend the GSHCS Ostomy Support Group. Medical professionals, as well as the families and caregivers of those living with ostomy, are also invited.

“It’s a place to share their own experiences, gain insight and hopefully build friendships,” said Cunningham.

Ostomy support group meetings are run by experienced facilitators and include workshops, guest speakers, and representatives from ostomy supply companies who will discuss product updates and help members of the group troubleshoot any problems.

Small snacks and beverages are provided at ostomy support group meetings.

“Having an ostomy can be very alienating; a support group allows individuals to connect with others in similar circumstances and not feel so alone,” said Cunningham.

Those interested in attending the Ostomy Support Group meeting on September 16 in Conference Center 1 on GSHCS’s Hermiston Campus can RSVP by calling 541.667.3684 or messaging GSHCS.
