BOARDMAN, Ore.-More details are emerging after a stabbing aboard an MTR Western Bus near Boardman on the afternoon of August 4, that sent two people to the hospital, one with serious injuries.

Boardman Fire Rescue District responded to a report of multiple people being stabbed on a bus on westbound I-84 near milepost 177 shortly after 4 p.m.

According to Oregon State Police, the incident started when the suspect, a 24-year-old male, was kicked off the bus after assaulting another passenger.

The suspect then reportedly tried to get into the storage compartment under the bus, but was confronted by the driver, a 64-year-old Christmas Valley, Oregon man.

The suspect knocked the driver to the ground and began punching him in the head. According to OSP, the driver managed to pull out a punch knife (a short blade with a “T” handle meant to be held in a closed fist) while being assaulted and stabbed the suspect.

The suspect was airlifted to Tri-Cities with serious injuries after the stabbing, while the first victim, a 41-year-old Roseburg, Oregon man, was transported to Good Shepherd Medical Center in Hermiston.

Oregon State Police, the Morrow County Sheriff’s Office and the Oregon Department of Transportation all assisted in the situation and I-84 was briefly closed due to the incident.
