WILSONVILLE, Ore.-Boys Volleyball is the latest state-sanctioned high school sport in Oregon, with the first season of play slated for Spring 2026.
The Oregon School Activities Association (OSAA) voted to approve boys volleyball as a sanctioned activity at its meeting on October 6.
Boys volleyball was classified as an emerging activity for the past two years and is the first activity to become officially sanctioned through the OSAA’s emerging activity process since girls wrestling ahead of the 2023-24 season.
Oregon is now the 26th state to add boys volleyball as a sanctioned activity.
The emerging activity process “allows the growth of meaningful interscholastic participation opportunities for students in athletics and activities that have the potential to meet the required number of schools participating to be considered for official sanctioning,” according to the OSAA.
An activity becomes eligible to be officially sanctioned if it is played by 50 or more schools during the two-year emerging activity process.
Boys Volleyball was unanimously approved as an “emerging activity” in 2023, and 68 varsity teams competed across Oregon last spring, according to the OSAA.
According to the American Volleyball Coaches’ Association (AVCA), boys volleyball has grown by 51 percent over the past six years. Oregon is now the 26th state to officially sanction boys volleyball.
