UMATILLA COUNTY, Ore.-Flu cases are on the rise nationwide, with flu activity “high” to “very high” in 32 states, according to the Centers for Disease Control (CDC).

As of December 20, the CDC estimates there have been around 7.5 million cases of the flu across the country this year, resulting in 3,100 influenza-related deaths nationwide.

Three flu-related deaths have been reported in both Idaho and Montana as of December 20, and the Washington State Department of Health has reported 18 lab-confirmed flu-related deaths during the 2025-26 flu season.

Flu activity is currently “very high” in Idaho, “moderate” in Washington, and “low” in Oregon, according to the CDC’s weekly Influenza Surveillance Report.

While Umatilla County Public Health (UCo Health) is not aware of any flu-related deaths so far this season in Northeast Oregon, the health department says the spike this time of year is not unusual, with cases usually peaking in January and February.

Flu shots are available at Good Shepherd Urgent Care, open seven days a week in Hermiston, as well as through the Good Shepherd Clinic Pharmacy. High-dose flu shots are also available.

According to the Oregon Health Authority’s (OHA) most recent flu bites, a weekly influenza surveillance report published during flu season, the current flu positivity percent is 10.8 percent, with a cumulative hospitalization rate for the 2025-26 season of about 5 people per 100,000.

Simple, well-known precautions, such as washing your hands frequently and thoroughly, covering your cough, and getting a flu shot, can all help stop the spread of flu this time of year.

“Getting a seasonal flu shot to reduce the severity of the disease is important, especially for those over 65, and I recommend it every year,” said Joseph Fiumara, Public Health Director for UCo Health. “It’s not too late to get a flu shot, although there will be limited impact if you wait much longer.”

The flu vaccine is usually available at most pharmacies or through primary care providers. Flu shots are also available through UCo Health in both Pendleton and Hermiston.

Although it can be hard this time of year with Holiday parties and gatherings, staying home when you don’t feel well is also essential in slowing the spread of the flu.

“I recommend being thoughtful around family gatherings this time of year if you are not feeling well,” said Fiumara. “Stay home for a couple of days, then get together with family when you’re feeling better.”
