HERMISTON, Ore.- Good Shepherd Health Care System (GSHCS) is hosting a free seminar on hip and knee joint replacement on Monday, March 23, from 5:00 p.m. to 6:30 p.m. in Conference Centers 1 & 2 at 610 NW 11th St., in Hermiston, OR.

“At Good Shepherd, we are striving to provide our community with orthopedic care that prioritizes optimal outcomes through patient-centered, team-based care,” said Board-Certified Orthopedic Surgeon Dr. Matthew Thompson, who will be leading the seminar.

“Joint” Effort: Understanding a Collaborative Approach to Success in Hip & Knee Joint Replacement will focus on the team-based approach to joint replacement, which starts with patient-led, shared decision-making between a patient and their healthcare providers about the best treatment options available, according to Dr. Thompson.

“If surgery is pursued, it continues with a collaborative medical evaluation focused on risk-reduction, successful surgery, and an optimized recovery,” said Dr. Thompson.

Collaboration between primary care providers, anesthesia staff, surgeons, care coordinators, physical therapists, nurses, patients, caretakers, administrators, and other team members is a central tenet of the team-based approach.

“The quality assurance professionals and processes we have built into our program at Good Shepherd ensure that we’re able to routinely study our patients’ outcomes and experiences to ensure quality care and positive outcomes, while also allowing early recognition of opportunities for continued quality improvement,” said Dr. Thompson.

In addition to team-based care and Mako Robotic-assisted surgery technology, the seminar will also cover the treatment of hip and knee arthritis, factors that impact successful total hip or knee replacement, and the current state of collaborative models of care and the technologies impacting total joint replacement.

The seminar is intended for community members, those with hip or knee joint concerns such as arthritis, potential patients considering hip or knee replacement, and caregivers and medical professionals throughout the region.

Attendees will have the opportunity to ask Dr. Thompson questions at the seminar, and Hors d’oeuvres and refreshments will be provided.

“With thoughtful attention to safety, education and risk reduction, we strive to provide our patients with the greatest chance of success when they are contemplating elective total hip or total knee replacement surgery,” said Dr. Thompson.
