Liz Marvin, Executive Director of the Good Shepherd Community Health Foundation presents Dr. Jonas Oltman with a certificate of recognition in honor of Doctors' Day

HERMISTON, Ore.-Some local healthcare providers recently received Doctors’ Day recognition at Good Shepherd Health Care System (GSHCS) in Hermiston.

Doctors’ Day is a national event to recognize the pivotal role physicians and other healthcare professionals play in safeguarding and improving the well-being of patients, according to the American Medical Association.

First celebrated in 1933, Congress passed a resolution recognizing Doctors’ Day in 1958, and the federal government passed a law establishing March 30 as Doctors’ Day in 1990.

Doctors’ Day continues to be an opportunity for healthcare institutions, patients and communities across the country to express their appreciation for healthcare workers.

Donors in the greater Hermiston area had the opportunity to honor, recognize, or memorialize a healthcare worker for Doctors’ Day with a donation to the Good Shepherd Community Health Foundation (GSCHF).

Dr. Bradley Tymchuk, an Internist at GSHCS receives Doctors’ Day recognition from Liz Marvin, Executive Director of the Good Shepherd Community Health Foundation

“For the Foundation, Doctors’ Day is really a twofold opportunity,” said Liz Marvin, GSCHF Executive Director. “First, it gives people a chance to personally thank and recognize a health care professional who has made a difference in their lives. Second, it offers a meaningful way to turn that gratitude into action by supporting the Good Shepherd Community Health Foundation through a donation.”

Dr. Jonas Oltman, a Family Physician who practices in Hermiston and Umatilla, was one of those honored with a goodie bag and Doctors’ Day certificate this year.

“As doctors, we sometimes get thanked a lot,” said Dr. Oltman. “While that’s not necessary, it’s important to have a day like Doctors’ Day as a little reminder to think about those things.”

Dr. Bradley Tymchuk, an Internist with GSHCS, was also chosen for Doctors’ Day recognition by an anonymous donor.

“Being honored for doing what I love is a privilege I don’t take for granted,” said Dr. Tymchuk, who has practiced at GSHCS for almost seven years. “While the award has my name on it, it truly belongs to the incredible team that supports me every day. I couldn’t have achieved this without them.”
