HERMISTON, Ore.-Good Shepherd Health Care System’s (GSHCS) Chaplain Services Department will host a National Day of Prayer community gathering on Thursday, May 7, from 12 p.m. to 1 p.m. in Conference Room 1 on the GSHCS campus in Hermiston.

“This gathering at Good Shepherd hopes to bring together individuals of many different backgrounds and faiths in unified prayer to God for our nation, leaders, communities, families, and hospital,” said Kristi Atkins, Manager of Chaplain Services at GSHCS.

Established by Congressional Resolution in 1952 and signed into law by President Harry S. Truman, National Day of Prayer is a day set aside for the People of the United States to turn to God in prayer and meditation at churches, in groups, and as individuals, according to the National Day of Prayer Task Force.

Atkins will open the National Day of Prayer community gathering at Good Shepherd, with prayers focused on this year’s theme of “Glorify God Among the Nations, Seeking Him in All Generations.”

Other GSHCS leaders, including Medical Services Staff Manager Amanda Chamberlain, and Joan Sonnenburg, Clinic Nurse Supervisor, will also lead prayers related to the national theme.

Individuals of all faith systems are welcome to attend the hour-long, non-denominational event that will feature guided prayer stations where community members in attendance can spend time in reflection and prayer.

“National Day of Prayer belongs to all Americans and is a day that transcends differences, bringing together people from all backgrounds,” said Atkins. “Prayer does not belong to any one group, club, or church, but is accessible to all.”

Light refreshments will be available at the prayer event, and attendees are welcome to stay longer than an hour to speak with chaplains or continue praying.

The event will remain open throughout the day following the community gathering to accommodate different work schedules and allow GSHCS staff the opportunity to pause, pray, or receive prayer.

Conference Room 1 is located across from the pharmacy on the main GSHCS campus at 610 NW 11th Street in Hermiston.
