MORROW COUNTY, Ore.- A contractor for upgrades and renovations at Riverside Junior/Senior High School in Boardman has been approved.

The District Evaluation Committee recommended Bouten Construction out of Tri-Cities for the contract, and the Morrow County School District (MCSD) Board of Education approved the recommendation on May 11.

The Riverside project includes building a new gym, locker rooms, and classrooms to meet the demands of the growing community, as well as remodeling the current classrooms, hallways, gym, and parking lot, according to the district.

“The Design Advisory Committee (DAC) has worked hard to make sure these additions and renovations are what our students, staff, and community need,” said Matt Combe, superintendent of the Morrow County School District. “The new gym and classroom space will give us room to continue growing, and remodeling current classrooms will create a secure, functional, and cost-efficient school building.”

Morrow County voters approved a $204.4 million bond to fund replacement of Irrigon Junior/Senior High School, renovation of Riverside Junior/Senior High School, and for the renovation and conversion of the Heppner Jr Sr High building into a K-12 campus, in the May 2025 Special Election.

The DAC, comprised of students, staff, parents, and community members, will continue refining floor plans for all three school projects, with an emphasis on functionality and day-to-day use.

According to the MCSD, SĀJ Architecture has conducted interviews with school principals and distributed surveys to staff to gain a better understanding of instructional needs and operations, as well as opportunities to improve learning environments.

SĀJ Architecture has also been working with the DAC to create an MCSD Educational Specifications Guide for facility design to ensure consistency and equity across the district, while supporting planning and budgeting.
