HERMISTON, Ore.-Hermiston residents have the opportunity to share their input and ideas regarding a proposed Health, Aquatics and Wellness Center (HAWC) this summer through a series of community surveys.
Hermiston is exploring the possibility of building the HAWC, in partnership with Umatilla County, other nearby cities, and community organizations.
“Community input is one of the most important parts of this planning effort,” said Byron Smith, Hermiston City Manager. “We want to ensure this facility reflects the priorities of the people who will use it.”
The proposed HAWC would provide year-round opportunities for fitness, recreation, and aquatics for all ages and abilities, as well as community programs and wellness services, while creating a gathering place that serves the needs of a growing region, according to the City of Hermiston.
A HAWC Task Force, comprised of representatives from local governments, educational institutions, healthcare organizations, and utility providers, has been meeting since 2024 to consider current and future community needs, review facility models, assess potential sites, and explore funding and operational options for the proposed facility.
The proposed HAWC would be at the site of the current Hermiston Family Aquatic Center and would cost an estimated $59-$63 million, including renovation and construction.
According to the City of Hermiston, property taxes will not be used to build the HAWC. Instead, construction would be funded through bonds, and enterprise zone funds would be used to pay the debt on those bonds.
Hermiston residents are encouraged to complete a series of short online surveys this summer covering topics such as facility amenities, membership and pricing preferences, and overall feedback on the HAWC concept.
“Whether it’s the amenities residents want to see or membership options, every response helps us build a center that truly serves our community,” said Smith.
