$1 Million Bail Set for Hermiston Man Charged with Attempted Murder

A Hermiston man is in jail on several charges including attempted murder for allegedly strangling a woman in front of her 2-year-old child. His bail has been set at more than $1 million.

Silvester De La Paz, 23, was arrested on Tuesday after the victim was taken to Good Shepherd Medical Center and reported the assault.

According to Hermiston Police Chief Jason Edmiston, De La Paz appeared at the victim’s home around 1 a.m. on Tuesday and attacked her by strangulation to the point where she lost consciousness several times. He also allegedly bit her numerous times.

“This was a vicious attack and something we are asking the district attorney’s office to look into further to ensure we have charged the appropriate levels of crime and have not overlooked any additional criminal charges,” Edmiston said. “The Department of Human Services assisted with this matter as a two year old child was present during the assault.

De La Paz faces the following charges:

  • Attempted murder
  • Second-degree kidnapping
  • Second-degree assault
  • Aggravated assault (strangulation)
  • Coercion
  • Menacing
  • Attempted unlawful use of a weapon
