HERMISTON, Ore.- The community will come together to plant 70 trees at the Eastern Oregon Trade & Event Center RV Park on November 3.

Amazon, Hermiston Parks & Recreation, EOTEC, and the Arbor Day Foundation are partnering on planting set for 1 p.m. at 1705 E. Airport Road in Hermiston.

The goal of the mass tree planting project is to help grow Hermiston’s tree canopy, providing shade and greenery, as well as additional benefits for the community, according to the City.

“Trees have the power to drive lasting, positive change in our cities and neighborhoods – they just need our help to plant them,” said Lachel Bradley-Williams, Senior Manager of Community Trees for the Arbor Day Foundation. “That’s why we’re grateful to partner with organizations like Amazon, who are committed to their role as local tree champions. Together we’re growing healthier, more resilient communities for generations to come.”

Trees planted in cities and neighborhoods have been proven to help reduce high temperatures, mitigate stormwater runoff, improve air quality, and boost mental and physical health, according to the Arbor Day Foundation.

Oak, hornbeam, sweetgum, and maple trees will be planted in an area outlining the RV park that was prepared for the plantings by Doug Bennett, of Bennett Botanical Garden and the Umatilla County Fair.

More than 50 volunteers have signed up to help plant trees, however, more are always welcome, according to event organizers.

“Planting a tree is a commitment to the future,” said Ben Harvey, Amazon Community Engagement Manager. “Long after the volunteers have gone home, these trees will still be growing, providing shade and vibrancy for generations of local residents.”
