Onion season in the Columbia Basin appears to be off to a promising start, according to area growers.
The Packer, a produce industry website, talked to several onion growers who are optimistic about this year’s harvest.
According to the article, Stefan Matheny, sales director for the Hermiston-based River Point Farms, said all evidence points to a solid harvest.
“We have been harvesting and packing new crop onions off our farm in Hermiston, Ore., for a couple weeks now. Quality and yields have been great, size profile has been larger, with the majority of our onions at jumbo sizing,” Matheny said.
Delbert Gehrke, vice president of farm for River Point, said the season was early after a warm spring.
Seattle-based onion distributor, F.C. Bloxom Co., is prepared for a good onion season.
Bryon Magnaghi, head of the company’s office in Walla Walla, Wash., said the growing conditions in Washington have been perfect for yellow onions this year.
“It’s been hot, but without extreme heat, so there’s been no shock to the crop. We’re expecting a good-sized and good-yielding crop,” Magnaghi said.
