FOREST GROVE, Ore.-The Baker Bulldogs boys basketball team brought a State Title home over the weekend after a 64-46 victory over Marshfield on March 15.

“Winning this championship for Baker is a huge boost for our supportive community,” said Head Coach Jebron Jones, whose team went 16-8 in the 4A Greater Oregon League this season.

The Bulldogs state run included a 54-48 win over Crook County in the quarterfinals, a 66-47 victory over Cascade in the Semifinals and a 64-46 win against Marshfield to bring home the title.

The Championship game against Marshfield, was a matchup of two smart, talented teams, with each alternately making runs and responding on the court before Baker pulled away, thanks to its relentless defensive pressure and bench depth.

“Our pressure overwhelmed them later in the game and our depth hurt them as well,” said Coach Jones. “With various weapons on the court at all times, it is hard for teams to key in on one or two players.”

The Bulldogs went on a run in the third quarter and were able to extend their lead in the fourth and pull away for the title. Marshfield, in Coos Bay, finished 23-4 on the season.

A large contingent of Baker faithful made the cross-state trek to watch the Bulldogs cut down the nets at Forest Grove High School west of Portland and their support was not lost on the team.

“Baker traveled well to the state tournament and many were able to be a part of this victory,” said Coach Jones. “The memories made by these young men and their families will last a lifetime.”
