UMATILLA, Ore.-The City of Umatilla has been recognized for the Umatilla Pedestrian Bridge Project that opened in December 2024.
“This award is a tremendous honor for the City of Umatilla and a testament to the dedication and collaboration that made the pedestrian bridge possible,” said Scott Coleman, Umatilla Public Works Director.
The City of Umatilla received the 2026 Honor Award from the American Council of Engineering Companies of Oregon (ACEC Oregon) for the project that has strengthened community connectivity and improved pedestrian safety.
The awards are presented annually for engineering achievements throughout Oregon that demonstrate innovation, complexity and public value.
According to the City of Umatilla, the Pedestrian Bridge project was honored for restoring a critical community connection while prioritizing safety, accessibility, and long-term durability.

Umatilla partnered with J-U-B Engineers, Inc. for the project to replace the pedestrian bridge that was destroyed by flooding.
“After the devastating floods of 2019 and 2020, restoring this connection was about more than replacing a structure; it was a bout rebuilding a vital link for our residents,” said Coleman. “The new bridge improves safety, accessibility, and resilience, and we’re proud of the lasting benefit it provides to our community.”
Part of the new pedestrian bridge project also included the installation of a new water main and other utility infrastructure to enhance system reliability and minimize future disruptions, according to the City of Umatilla.
Funding for the $6.6 million pedestrian bridge project was provided through $4.8 million in Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) assistance, with the City of Umatilla contributing about $1.1 million, and over $700,000 in support coming from Business Oregon’s Special Public Works Grant Program.
According to the City of Umatilla, the pedestrian bridge has provided a safe, welcoming crossing for pedestrians and bicyclists, expanded recreational opportunities, and strengthened connections between the South Hill Neighborhood and downtown since opening in 2024.
