David Michael McCarty passed away on Jan. 2, 2026 at the age of 59.
He was born on June 3, 1966 in Hermiston.
A devoted son, father, grandfather, brother, and friend, David lived a life defined by hard work, fearlessness, and an unwavering commitment to the things he loved most—his family, the mountains, and the sky.
From a young age, David was driven and bold. He graduated from Echo High School where he distinguished himself in rodeo, specializing in bareback riding. One of the proud highlights of his early years was earning the opportunity to compete in the renowned Calgary Stampede—an achievement that reflected both his grit and determination.
David carried that same drive into his professional life. In his twenties he founded McCarty Logging, building a reputation for dedication, resilience, and a deep respect for the land. Logging was not just his work—it was one of his greatest passions, especially when it meant being deep in the mountains, beyond cell coverage, fully immersed in the world he loved.
In 1996, David went on to establish Columbia Basin Helicopters, Inc., combining his entrepreneurial spirit with his lifelong love of aviation. An experienced and highly skilled pilot, David was known for his confidence in the cockpit and his deep understanding of the aircraft he flew. Flying was more than a career—it was part of who he was. Whether supporting demanding operations or simply being in the air, David felt most at home above the ground.
Those who knew David will remember him as hardworking, fearless, and intensely dedicated. He was business-minded and driven, yet equally at peace fishing, spending time with his dogs—each one a favorite in its own time—and living life on his own terms in the outdoors he cherished.
David is survived by his parents, Mike and Jane McCarty; his siblings, Dan (Brandy), Suzanne (Gary), and Maryjane (Aaron); his children, Clay, Ben, and Jolee; and his grandchildren, Amelia, Baron, Axl, and Nox. He is also survived by numerous extended family members and friends. David is further survived by his fiancé, Joelleen Linstrom, and her son, Anthony. David’s memory will live on through the many lives he touched and the impact he had on those around him.
David Michael McCarty leaves behind a powerful legacy—one built on courage, independence, and a life lived fully and without hesitation. His presence will be deeply missed, but his spirit will continue to soar in the mountains he loved and the skies he called home.
A joint celebration of life service for David, Rachel, Faith, and Katelyn will be held on Sunday, Feb. 1, 2026 at 1 p.m. at the Toyota Center in Kennewick, Wash.
In lieu of flowers, donations in David’s memory may be made for future charities at Columbia Bank in Hermiston.
