The Hermiston School District will host Parent University Nights with guest speaker Dr. Luis Cruz, an education reformer from inner-city Los Angeles, to assist parents in finding out how to help their children be successful in school.
Cruz will speak at each secondary school in the district during the week of Sept. 23. Bulldog Parent University will be held at Hermiston High School on Monday, Sept. 23. Parent University will kick off for the middle schools on Tuesday, Sept. 24, at Sandstone Middle School and on Wednesday, Sept. 25 at Armand Larive Middle School. The evening events will begin at 5 p.m. with an English parent session, which will be followed by a Spanish parent session at 7 p.m.
Parents will learn how their role in education is changing, what children need from parents in order to be successful in school, and be able to meet Dr. Cruz.

• Oct. 28 – HHS Bulldog Parent University
• Week of Dec. 2 – Promoting Literacy at Home
• Week of Jan. 27 – Student Testing Success
• Week of March 10 – Finishing Strong, Celebrating Successes
Cruz is a former principal of Baldwin Park High School, located east of Los Angeles. His previous work experience includes being a teacher and administrator at the elementary, middle, and high school levels. His recognitions include New Teacher of the Year, Teacher of the Year, Administrator of the Year, and other community leadership awards. Cruz earned a doctorate in institutional leadership and policy studies from the University of California Riverside.
