Forrest Starrett of Hermiston Passes Away at 93

Forrest “Woody” Starrett of Hermiston passed away on Sept. 24, 2017 at the age of 93.

He was born on Nov. 13, 1923 in Portland to James and Josie Kennedy Starrett.

He lived in Dayville throughout his childhood, where he attended school and graduated from high school in the early 1940s. After high school, he served in the U.S. Army during World War II. He studied engineering at Princeton University, where he had the opportunity to meet Albert Einstein. After his honorable discharge, Woody moved to Hermiston, where he had resided since. He owned and operated Starrett’s Décor in Hermiston for over 25 years. He also served as a Umatilla County commissioner for two terms and as a Port of Umatilla commissioner for 20 years.

He enjoyed going to his cabin in the mountains near Heppner. Some of his favorite things were teaching his grandchildren about nature; Bucky, his pet deer; four wheeling with the grandchildren; carpentry work; and helping other people.

He is survived by his wife, Bonnie; children, Brian Starrett, Judy Deihl, Lenielle Sloan, Patty Hackler and Lorrie Sandoval; sister, Joy DeMain; 14 grandchildren; and many great grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents and son, David.

A celebration of life service will be held at 10 a.m. on Saturday, Sept. 30, 2017 in the Burns Mortuary Chapel in Hermiston.
