George Prather Passes Away at 78

George Wesley Prather went to be with the Lord on Oct. 14, 2025 at his home in Hermiston surrounded by his family at the age of 78.

He was born on Sept. 17, 1947 in Grants Pass to Bert and Ruth Prather.

When George was born, his family lived in Murphy. Throughout his childhood, the family moved between Pasco and Finley, Wash. His family settled in Umatilla when George was a teenager. After getting married in the early ‘70s, he moved to Hermiston. On June 2, 1970 he started working at Union Pacific Railroad. His career ended in 1990 when he was medically retired. After retirement, you could find George at Bi-Mart on Lucky Number Tuesday. In August 2022, Hank, George’s baby, came into his life. Hank loved going for rides in the truck. George and Hank could be found walking around in Bi-Mart, Walmart and Ace Hardware on a regular basis.

George enjoyed spending time with his family (especially his grandkids and great-grandkids), riding motorcycles, reading, watching baseball, woodworking, jigsaw puzzles and tinkering with mowers.

Left behind are his fur baby, Hank; daughters, Marlene (Phillip) Prather-Dunn and Lori (Brad) Abbott; grandkids, Brianne Holden, Nathaniel Holden, Christopher (Christina) Abbott, Ethan (Sierra) Abbott and Ashley (Luke) Walter; great-grandkids, Paige, Paisley, Savette and Delilah; siblings, Marie (Ron) Smith; BJ (Dusty) Nolan, Paul Prather and Colleen Jermanon; and multiple nieces, nephews and cousins.

George was preceded in death by his parents, Bert and Ruth Prather and siblings, Betty, Jeff and Harold Prather.

Services were held on Monday, Oct. 20, 2025.
