Girl Scouts of Oregon and Southwest Washington in Service Unit 22 collected a total of 1,496 pounds of nonperishable food and $10 in donations for three Umatilla County food pantries during their annual Scouting for Food drive this year.

On April 25, two Girl Scout troops rounded up 537 pounds of groceries for the Echo Food Bank and one Girl Scout troop gathered 200 pounds for Pendleton’s Salvation Army. Earlier in the month, three troops collected 759 pounds for Hermiston’s Agape House.

With just six troops participating this year, all of us Girl Scout leaders are just amazed at what the girls have done for fellow members in their community,” said Michelle Kane, volunteer communications coordinator for Service Unit 22. “They have such big hearts and want to help in any way they can.”

Girl Scouts encourages everyone to continue making food and/or monetary donations to their local food banks. The need isn’t just around the holidays, it’s year round.

Kane added that area Girl Scouts are still in great need of adults — parents, grandparents or neighbors — to lead troops or join the area’s leadership service team.

“We have several girls waiting to join, but they are waiting for someone to step up to be their leader,” Kane said.
