Girl Scout Troop 50117 doesn’t want anyone to go hungry this holiday season. So, while others went holiday shopping, the girls went door to door in McNary over Thanksgiving weekend asking for canned food for local food banks.

In just four hours, the troop of 14 girls ranging from kindergarten through fifth grade and their parents had gathered 911 pounds of food and $130.

“The monetary money is being donated to the community dinner,” said Denise Griffith, the troop’s leader. She added that the food will be divided up and given to the Umatilla Fire Association for the food baskets it gives to families in need at Christmas, as well as the Agape House and Yakima Food Bank.

This is the second year the Girl Scouts of Oregon and Southwest Oregon troop has put together a food drive during the holidays. Griffith is proud of the girls’ hard work and amazed by the community’s generosity.

“We didn’t use flyers. We just went door to door,” explained Griffith. “I can honestly say most homes donated to the cause!”

Girl Scouts of Oregon and Southwest Oregon will hold another food drive throughout Service Unit 22, which encompasses Umatilla, Morrow, Gilliam and Wheeler counties, on April 28.
