HERMISTON, Ore.-The Good Shepherd Health Care System Auxiliary awarded $24,000 in scholarships to eight local students pursuing careers in health care or a medical field at a luncheon on June 5.
“Scholarships are funded by fundraisers held by the auxiliary throughout the year, including bake sales, sponsored sales and, of course, the GSHCS gift shop, which raises the most money,” said Sandra Trapp, an Auxiliary volunteer.
The eight, three-thousand-dollar scholarships awarded this year to students with at least one year of college completed, are the most ever awarded by the Auxiliary.
“It’s truly a great honor to receive a GSHCS Auxiliary Scholarship to help pay for college and allow me to not have to work while going to school,” said Emma Mueller of Irrigon, who is attending Notre Dame of Maryland University. “This scholarship has enabled me to pursue both my dreams of completing a health science degree, while playing collegiate volleyball.”
Auxiliary scholarships are awarded to students from the areas that GSHCS serves, including Hermiston, Stanfield, Echo, Umatilla, Irrigon and Boardman.
“It’s a challenge to work full-time while being a full-time nursing student,” said Amber Gorbett of Hermiston, who is attending Blue Mountain Community College. “This scholarship takes away that burden and will actually pay for my first term of nursing school.”
