HERMISTON, Ore.- Hermiston High School students recently completed a day of Enhanced Core Reading Instruction (ECRI) training with the district.

“Now in its second year, the ECRI training has become a cornerstone of our Education Pathway, giving students the same evidence-based tools and strategies that our teachers use every day,” said Tammy Fisher, Family and Consumer Science Teacher at Hermiston High School.

The ECRI training is part of the Hermiston School District’s (HSD) ongoing efforts to provide students with high-impact, real-world learning opportunities, and offers high school students who plan to pursue careers in education access to the same professional development offered to certified educators.

A recent day of ECRI training featured real-world learning opportunities and introduced students to the Science of Reading framework, building a strong foundation in evidence-based literacy instruction.

“This consistency not only prepares students to serve as high-dosage reading tutors, but also ensures they are entering the education profession with a strong foundation in effective literacy instruction,” said Fisher.

The training also prepared students to apply research-driven strategies in their practicum placements and future college coursework, which should help students advance their readiness for careers in teaching, according to the HSD.
