HERMISTON, Ore. – The Hermiston High School wrestling program grappled its way to another dominant performance at the WIAA Mat Classic XXXVI at the Tacoma Dome Feb. 20-21.
The Bulldogs boys brought home second place overall for the fourth straight year, while the girl’s team finished third, earning a team trophy for the first time in program history, according to the school.
“Our community and our school have so much to be proud of with our wrestling program,” said Hermiston High School Director of Athletics and Activities Larry Usher.
Jaysen Rodriguez earned a state title on the mat for the Hermiston boys and several other Bulldogs finished in the top ten individually.
Aidan Larson brought home second place for Hermiston, while Dominic Echeverria, Jayden Martinez, and Bryan Medelez all finished third in their respective weight classes. Jacoby Rodriguez came in fourth, Mason Miracle took fifth and Brayden Harrison finished in seventh for the Bulldog boys.
The third-place trophy was the best finish ever for the Hermiston girls behind third place finishes from Iaunny Ruiz and Tuta Sepeni, a pair of fourth-place finishes from Emily Stone and Kianna Gutierrez-Munoz, a seventh-place from Jaydan McKim and an eighth-place from Jorgia McKim.
“The way these athletes competed and represented Hermiston was incredible,” said Usher. “We are very excited about what the future holds, as we have the potential to continue excelling on both the boys’ and girls’ sides for years to come.”
