Hermiston man charged with attempted murder after machete attack

HERMISTON, Ore.-A Hermiston man with a lengthy criminal record was arrested April 21 on suspicion of attempted murder.

Vernon Adams was arrested in connection to an incident on April 13 when he reportedly attacked a 44-year-old man with a machete in a field on the 800 block of E. Elm Avenue, stole a bag of clothes from the victim and ran from the scene.

A Umatilla woman reported the attack around 12:29 p.m. when she saw the victim covered in blood after they were hit or stabbed in the back of the head. According to Hermiston PD, the victim was taken to the hospital and treated for a large cut about seven inches long on their head.

Around 4:30 p.m. on April 21 Hermiston PD officers spotted Adams near Walmart and arrested him after a brief chase.

Adams was booked into the Umatilla County Jail and later charged with first-degree murder, first-degree assault and first-degree robbery, his bail has been set at $150,000.

According to Hermiston PD, this is the 18th time Adams has been arrested, and the attempted murder charge is the 45th criminal charge filed against him.
