Hermiston police arrested a man early Monday, Sept. 23, after he slashed a transient in a hotel room.

Police Chief Jason Edmiston reported Brandon Hobart, 33, was highly intoxicated at about 12:45 a.m. when he believed a group of males were having sex with an underage female in a room at the Oyo Hotel, 655 N. First St., Hermiston.

Hobart tried to break through the hotel room door while armed with a knife, according to Edmiston, forcing the occupants of the room to flee out the window in the back.

“Hobart then cornered a 25-year-old transient male in the laundry room and cut his right hand, causing a severe laceration and profuse bleeding,” Edmiston reported.

The victim was taken to Good Shepherd Medical Center, Hermiston, where he refused treatment and left against medical advice.

Medical staff told Hermiston police officers the victim could lose his hand if not treated, Edmiston said, but there was no information on the status or whereabouts of the victim.

Hobert faces preliminary charges of second-degree assault, a Class B felony, unlawful use of a weapon, a Class C felony, and second-degree criminal mischief, a Class A misdemeanor.

Hobert on Sept. 24 posted $5,000 bail to get out of the Umatilla County Jail, according to state court records, and he has probable cause hearing Sept. 30 in Hermiston.
