The Hermiston School District announced its plans for students as the distance learning process begins to be phased out.

For the past five weeks, in response to the coronavirus pandemic, students have been receiving regular contact from their classroom teachers to help them prioritize their time and to emphasize the most important and relevant learning strategies, as well as to continue pushing them forward toward their learning goals and standards.

This current format will end on May 29.

“The district’s focus during this distance learning period has been for teachers to make a connection with their students,” said Superintendent Dr. Tricia Mooney. “It has been about connection, rather than correction. The district has been more concerned with the basic needs of students, rather than pushing school work and instruction.” The district has been providing free meals to students since the state-wide school closure went into effect earlier this spring.

Following the sunset of distance learning, teachers will organize student work and scores to input student year-end grades. Teachers will also consult with their administrators and peers to adjust instructional scope and sequence for the next school year to ensure students get caught up and don’t fall behind.

Families can expect contact from their student’s school about a June pick up for personal belongings and supplies left in their classroom or locker. During this time, families are asked to return Chromebook devices and hot spots checked out from the district. This will allow the technology department to inventory and service equipment for next fall.
