HERMISTON, Ore.-The transfer station in Hermiston closed early on October 7 following the disposal of a possible pipe bomb.

The transfer station, at 81144 N. Highway 395, closed after being informed by the Hermiston Police Department that a customer may have disposed of a pipe bomb that was collected by Sanitary Disposal.

Oregon State Police have also been notified of the situation, and the transfer station and shop were evacuated as a precaution.

“Our primary role at this point has been to connect resources, the OSP bomb squad with Sanitary Disposal leadership,” said Hermiston PD Chief Jason Edmiston.

According to Chief Edmiston, the possible pipe bomb came from the residence of a man who was found dead on October 1.

Hermiston PD investigated the death and at this time it is believed that controlled substances were involved.

Family members of the deceased man found the suspected pipe bomb when cleaning his residence and threw it in the garbage.

After Sanitary Disposal collected the trash on October 7, the family members who threw it away told their mother what they had found, and she reported it to Hermiston PD.

The transfer station will be closed for the rest of the day.
