Large brush fire contained after forcing evacuations in Hermiston

HERMISTON, Ore.-A large brush fire near the bus barn in the Liberty Lane area of Hermiston that forced some evacuations of nearby residents was contained around 4:44 p.m. on June 13.

Residents south of Bensel Road to Klause Road and east of Highway 395 to Alpine Drive have were under Level 3 (GO NOW) evacuations and the Umatilla County Sheriff’s Office helped residents get out safely.

Residences south of Bensel and Bagett were under Level 2 (Get Set) evacuation notices due to the fire.

UCFD1 crews and several fire agencies from around the area provided mutual aid for the fire that burned some buses and structures, according to UCFD1.

While the forward progress of the fire was stopped at 4:44 p.m., fire crews remained on scene to mop up after the fire and assess the damage.

The Boardman Fire Rescue District, East Umatilla Fire & Rescue, Echo Fire Department, Heppner Fire Department, Irrigon Rural Fire Protection District, Pendleton Fire Department, Pilot Rock Fire District, Umatilla Tribal Fire District, Umatilla Rural Fire District, Oregon State Police,Umatilla Police Department, and Umatilla County Sheriff’s Office, Umatilla Electric Co-Operative, Pacific Power and Bonneville Power all assisted UCFD1 with mutual aid during the fire.

As of 6 p.m. all evacuation orders due to the fire were lifted.
