UMATILLA, Ore.-A man wanted on several out-of-state warrants, including one for murder was arrested in Umatilla on March 13.

A Umatilla Police Sergeant on patrol noticed the man, who matched the description of a wanted suspect, around 8:19 a.m. near 6th Street and L Street.

The suspect ran, but was taken into custody after a brief chase. Umatilla PD has confirmed that the 31-year-old suspect has outstanding warrants out of South Dakota for attempted murder, robbery, burglary and assault.

According to Umatilla PD, the suspect has no known connection to Umatilla or the area that law enforcement is yet aware of.

The incident caused the Umatilla School District to be placed in a lockdown until the suspect was taken into custody.

According to Umatilla PD, the lockdown was a precautionary measure and was very brief, only lasting about ten minutes.

“We are thankful for the outstanding partnership with Umatilla Police Department,” said Superintendent Heidi Sipe. “In the midst of stressful situations, they prioritize student safety and keep us notified.”

The suspect has been booked into the Umatilla County Jail.

Multiple law enforcement agencies responded to the situation to assist Umatilla PD, including Oregon State Police, Hermiston Police, the Umatilla County Sheriff’s Office, the Morrow County Sheriff’s Office, the Umatilla Rural Fire Department and Umatilla County Fire District 1.
