A California man’s day went from bad to worse on Friday.

First, he was injured in a traffic accident south of Eugene. Next, he was facing for possession of marijuana after accident investigators found more than three pounds of marijuana scattered along the highway in the wake of the accident.

The series of unfortunate events began around 4:50 a.m. on Friday, May 30, when Oregon State Police troopers, fire personnel and the Oregon Department of Transportation responded to the scene of an injury accident on Interstate 5 involving a sport utility vehicle and a commercial truck.

Upon arrival, OSP troopers found a Jeep Cherokee on its top blocking the northbound lanes of I-5. But that’s not all they found. During the accident, several jars stuffed with pot spilled onto the interstate.

The Jeep’s driver, Dominic Winders, 18, from Fort Jones, Calif., was transported by ambulance to a hospital for non-life threatening injuries. His passenger, Anthony Pitts, 51, also from Fort Jones, was treated on the scene for minor injuries. The truck driver, Robert Chase, 27, of Springfield, was not injured.

OSP troopers found the Jeep contained numerous jars of marijuana, some of which broke open inside and outside the vehicle, and nearly an ounce of hash. Estimated weight of the marijuana is over three pounds.

Pitts was cited to appear in Lane County Circuit Court for unlawful possession of four ounces or more of marijuana. When the investigation is completed, it will be sent to the District Attorney’s office for consideration of additional charges toward both Pitts and Winders.

The northbound lanes were opened to one lane about 5:30 a.m. until the scene was cleared.
