HERMISTON, Ore.-National Night Out community events are planned for August 5 in Hermiston and Umatilla.
“The intent behind National Night Out is to provide a positive and healthy opportunity for neighbors who may only know one another in passing, to engage each other outside the day-to-day grind,” said Hermiston Police Chief Jason Edmiston.
National Night Out Hermiston
For over 20 years Hermiston PD has held a treasure hunt for a medallion leading up to NNO. Clues as to the medallions whereabouts are published in the local media and whoever finds it gets a party in their neighborhood.
“For our department, it allows officers to nurture existing partnerships and build on new ones,” said Chief Edmiston.
According to Hermiston PD, Stacy Carter, Tyra Carter, and Tyler Couch found the medallion this year in the area of the Hermiston Community Center.
The block party, featuring law enforcement personnel, City officials and representatives from Cuppa Yo, will be on the 300 block of Northeast Christy Drive on August 5.
National Night Out Umatilla
Umatilla’s National Night Out celebration will be held from 5:30-7:30 p.m. in Nugent Park located at 725 8th Street and will feature live music, free food, activities for kids and police and fire demonstrations.

Held annually on the first Tuesday of August, National Night Out (NNO) is a community-building campaign to promote police-community partnerships and neighborhood camaraderie.
An opportunity to bring police and neighbors together under positive circumstances, NNO events include neighborhood block parties, festivals, parades, cookouts, seminars, safety demonstrations, emergency personnel and exhibits.
According to the NNO organization, events have been held in 17,000 communities, with 38 million neighbors participating in the past 42 years, since the initiative was launched through a network of law enforcement agencies, neighborhood watch programs, civic groups, state and regional crime prevention associates and volunteers, in 1984.
Hermiston and Umatilla are among 77 cities that will host registered NNO events in 2025.
