UMATILLA COUNTY, Ore.-Open burning within the Umatilla County Fire District #1 (UCFD#1) service area, including both Hermiston and Stanfield, is now closed.

Open burning closed June 1 and will remain closed through October 1.

According to UCFD#1, the annual closure is intended to reduce the risk of human-caused wildfires during periods of increased fire danger and protect lives, property, crops, and natural resources throughout the community.

Small sparks from debris burning, equipment use, vehicles, and other outdoor activities can quickly ignite dry grass and brush under current conditions, and UCFD#1 has already responded to multiple brush fires in the region this spring.

With fire conditions expected to get worse throughout the summer, UCFD#1 is reminding residents that sparks from debris burning, equipment use, vehicles and other outdoor activities can quickly ignite dry grass and brush.

Violation of the burn policy may be punishable by a fine up to $250.00 or the cost of fire response and/or suppression for apparatus and personnel, whichever is greater in accordance with the Fire District Cost Recovery Ordinance.

A full breakdown of UCFD#1’s burn policy, including some frequently asked questions concerning when burn season is, and what can be burned, is available online.
