The Hermiston City Council will vote on an ordinance tonight that would prohibit the establishment of a medical marijuana facility inside the city limits.
A key part of the ordinance states that marijuana is federally classified as a Schedule 1 controlled substance which supersedes Oregon’s law that allows for medical marijuana dispensaries in the state. If passed tonight, the ordinance would be enacted immediately. Typically, ordinances go into effect 30 days after passage, but because the Oregon Health Authority is expected to begin registering applications for medical marijuana facilities today, the Hermiston City Council is declaring an emergency, thereby allowing for the amendment to take effect immediately after passage.
Last week, the council responded to news that Stoney Girl Gardens Foundation would be applying for a medical marijuana permit in Hermiston by announcing the city would go to court to seek an injunction to stop any medical marijuana facility from operating in Hermiston.
Mike Mullins of Stoney Girl Garden Foundations told the council last week that his group would apply for a permit today.
Also tonight, the council will consider draft guidelines for its urban renewal face grants program.
