PENDLETON, Ore.-The City of Pendleton received three awards from the Oregon Chapter of the American Public Works Association during its annual conference in Bend, OR, October 28-31.
Pendleton was recognized with Sustainability Practices Awards at both the individual and project levels, and also received a Project of the Year Award for the Pendleton Bus Barn project.
The Solar Canopy project at the Pendleton Wastewater Treatment Resource Recovery Facility (WWTRRF) received an APWA Sustainability Practices Award, which recognizes individuals, programs, agencies and organizations that have made outstanding contributions to promote sustainability in public works.
“Receiving the APWA Sustainability Practice Award is a testament to the outstanding teamwork between AMERESCO and our Wastewater Treatment Plant staff,” said Pendleton’s Assistant Public Works Director Kyle Willman. “Together, we turned this vision into reality, advancing sustainability, efficiency, and environmental stewardship for our community.”
Solar panels above the chlorine contact chamber generate power for the WWTRRF facility and cool the water, which leads to less chlorine lost due to ultraviolet degradation, according to a City of Pendleton press release.
Willman, the Superintendent at WWTRRF, received a Sustainability Practices Award for his efforts in bringing the solar canopy project to fruition, as well as his work on other sustainability projects at the facility.
The Pendleton Bus Barn at 4834 NW H Avenue, was awarded Project of the Year in the under $5 million category at the APWA Conference.
The $3.5 million project to house Pendleton’s public transportation fleet, including ADA buses and minivans, was funded by the City of Pendleton, Umatilla County and Department of Transportation grants.
