Snow Impacts Schools, Playoff Game

About an inch of snow fell in the Columbia Basin on Thursday, causing the cancellation of school and the postponement of tonight's football playoff game between the Hermiston Bulldogs and the Liberty Falcons.

Snow and icy road conditions are playing havoc in the Lower Columbia Basin with widespread school closures and the postponement of tonight’s football playoff game between Hermiston and Liberty.

School was canceled for Morrow County Schools, as well as schools in Hermiston, Umatilla, Echo and Stanfield. Tonight’s scheduled 5A state football playoff game between the Bulldogs and the Liberty Falcons has been postponed due to the weather. Instead, it has been re-scheduled for 7 p.m. on Saturday.

Thursday’s snowfall came as expected – but far less than was forecast. The National Weather Service predicted snow to fall throughout the night and into today, with possibly as much as 6-8 inches falling. Instead, about an inch fell during the afternoon and early evening.

The updated forecast for today and throughout the weekend calls for clear skies and high temperatures around the freezing level. It is expected to get downright frigid tonight, with the overnight low expected to dip to 7 degrees, but should warm up over the weekend with lows in the mid- to upper-20s.

According to the Hermiston School District, tonight’s Hermiston High School fall play performance of A Company of Wayward Saints will take the stage as scheduled at 7 p.m. Saturday’s performance will go on as planned, if no further severe weather hits Hermiston.
