Sanitary Disposal’s annual Spring Cleanup Week is set for April 1-7.
During the week, cash customers using the Sanitary Disposal Transfer Station will receive up to a $13.50 discount off each load. This means loads measuring 2.5 cubic feet with a maximum weight of 454 pounds can be disposed of free of charge. This includes all acceptable solid waste with the exception of tires, which will be charged at the regular rate.
Cleanup week is also a good time to recycle. Recycling saves energy, reduces waste and conserves resources. For example, every glass bottle that is recycled saves enough energy to light a 100-watt light bulb for four hours.
In 2013, the Hermiston-area residents recycled 529 tons of cardboard, 108 tons of newspaper, 19.66 tons of glass, 6.15 tons of tin and a half ton of aluminum. Recycling centers in Hermiston are located at 955 W. Orchard Avenue and 220 W. Harper Road.
The transfer station is located two miles north of Hermiston on the west side of Highway 395. Its hours are 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. on week days and 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. on weekends.
