Stanfield police arrested a man Tuesday morning who is a suspect in two murders in Lewiston, Idaho.
Stanfield Police Chief Bryon Zumwalt said Richard Allen Carlin, 73, was arrested outside the McDonald’s restaurant next to the Pilot Truck Stop in Stanfield around 10:30 a.m. Carlin is wanted on a felony murder warrant in connection with the killing of two people in Lewiston and an assault on a third person.
Zumwalt said the Lewiston Police Department received information Carlin could be traveling through Umatilla County. An Attempt to Locate notification was sent to area law enforcement with the suspect and possible vehicle information.
Zumwalt said he located Carlin at the Pilot Truck Stop when the suspect stopped for fuel, after seeing the vehicle turn off the highway. Zumwalt and Stanfield Police officer Joyce Wright conducted a Felony Stop on the vehicle, which had stopped in front of the McDonald’s Restaurant. The suspect was taken into custody and lodged at the Umatilla County Jail. Carlin’s vehicle was impounded and removed from the scene.
Zumwalt said Carlin’s female passenger was detained and released a short time later following an interview. According to the police chief, she had no involvement or knowledge of his crimes, and had just gotten a ride from the suspect.
The Stanfield Police Department was assisted at the scene by the Oregon State Police, the Morrow County Sheriff’s Office, and the Umatilla County Sheriff’s Office.
