A Hermiston teacher will team with a local health professional today to provide hands-on learning for the students.

Kelly Allen, a seventh grade social arts and science and health teacher is teaming up with Tony Garberg, the director of respiratory care at Good Shepherd Medical Center. Garberg will be at Armand Larive at 1:30 p.m. today. Students in Allen’s class have been learning about the heart and lungs and how outside factors affect the human body. Garberg will be taking a set of human lungs and a heart to showcase the effects of tobacco, drugs, and alcohol on these important body parts.

Garber will cover the function of the lungs, lung lobes, and how smoking damages the lungs. Students will also learn about the heart, the chambers and what causes heart attacks. His presentation will be about 40 minutes long and a question/answer session will follow.

“We like to collaborate with others,” said Armand Larive Principal Stacie Roberts. “I spoke to Mr. Garberg this summer about the possibility of him or other professionals from the hospital coming to Armand to share their knowledge with our students. It’s also a great way to introduce other professions to our students. Mr. Allen is in the middle of a perfect health unit, he reached out to Mr. Garberg, who is more than excited to come! We are delighted to have him in our building.”
