Tamástslikt Announces ArtWORKz Winners

Tamástslikt Cultural Institute announced the winners of the juried competition in ArtWORKz 2015, the fifth annual junior art show and competition.

Grand Prizes, Awards of Excellence, Awards of Merit, and Honorable Mentions were awarded in each age category:15-18, 11-14, and 10 & under. Best Emerging Artist and Artists’ Choice winners were also awarded. This year’s ArtWORKz showcased 131 pieces of art submitted by talented young artists from throughout the region, including Pendleton, Hermiston, Burbank, Milton-Freewater, and even Hardin, Mont.

Grand Prizes were awarded to Carson Ayama, 9, for “The Whole Other Story”; Jenna Thomas, 13, for “Morning Nibbles”; and Grayson Hughbanks, 17, for “Little Bird.”

Awards of Excellence went to Daniel Dick, 7, for “Untitled”; Jason Bearchum, 11, for “Untitled”; and Alexis Sharpe, 18, for “Native American Bride.”
Awards of Merit went to Elijah Bearchum, 10, for “Birch Trees In Winter”; Lucy Oyama, 11, for “Stand Strong”; and Frances Gomez Chalakee, 18, for “At Peace with Herself.”

Honorable Mentions in the 0-10 age group were given to Rytta Quaempts-Snively,9; Sascha Quaempts, 5; Avery Quaempts, 8; Nizhoni Bearchum, 5; Otto Quaempts-Snively, 10.

In the 11-14 age group, Honorable Mentions were awarded to Meritza Arroyo, 14; Esmeralda Morfin, 14; Adilene Uribe, 14; Kipling Bose, 14; Evelyn Garcia, 14; Banyan Moss, 12; Lilee Roggow, 14; and Makenzie McLead, 14.

And for the 15-18 age group, Honorable Mentions were given to Chelan Gomez, 15; Arlen Blue Thunder, 15; Elise Griffith, 18; Erin Monagle, 16; EllaMae Looney, 15; Jacqueline Fisher, 18; and Teata Oatman, 17.

Best Emerging Artist was awarded to Tianna Arthur, 12, for “Flowers and Dreamcatchers.”

Artists’ Choice awards were determined by vote of the participating artists. First Place went to Frances Gomez Chalakee, 18, for “At Peace with Herself” and Second Place went to Elise Griffith, 18, for “Chief.”

The 2016 ArtWORKz Junior Art Show and Competition remains on view at Tamástslikt Cultural Institute through Feb. 27. Tamastslikt will be accepting entries for the 2017 ArtWORKz in December 2016.
