Tests Show Hermiston’s Kennison Field Receiving Good Maintenance

Despite the number of teams using the field and the punishment they can deliver during games, Hermiston High School’s Kennison Field is in fine shape, according to recent testing.

The Hermiston School District had Kennison Field’s synthetic turf GMax tested as part of the regular summer maintenance projects.

The GMax score for Kennison Field reflects good maintenance has been done since its installation.

The turf is composed of synthetic grass supported by thousands of pounds of pulverized rubber. The pieces of rubber known as crumb rubber or in-fill plays an important role in the safety of the turf.

The field is tested in 10 designated test points to measure shock attenuation. The testing involves a 20- pound missile that is dropped 24 inches into the ground to test the in-fill depth and turf temperature. The test measures how fast the missile comes to a stop on impact. Overall, the test results help determine if there are any areas of concern and if maintenance, repair or replacement is required.

A harder surface increases the risk of concussion or injuries as a player hits the turf, and too much in-fill softens the surface and requires more physical effort from athletes which may cause strain on joints and muscles as well as poor player performance.

“The scores are indicative of the work done by our grounds crew,” said Facilities Supervisor Martie McQuain. “Monthly sweeps of the field have proven to be a diligent method to keep the field in good condition. Our coaching staff, community members and visiting teams have also helped maintain our field in good condition by keeping food, and drinks (except for water) off the field.”

A pull magnet was also used to remove a handful of items from the turf such as bobby and safety pins, track spikes to name a few. The synthetic turf is also thoroughly sanitized on a yearly basis to help keep harmful bacteria away.
