HERMISTON, Ore.-The Umatilla County Fair held a blood drive in partnership with Good Shepherd Health Care System (GSHCS) and the American Red Cross on July 28.
The Fair Court Princesses are a major part of the Umatilla County Fair, and this year Princess Dena Loiland and Princess Morgan Harris, who are continuing the honored tradition of representing the fair, attended the blood drive.
“This is a chance to be a part of something bigger than yourself,” said Princess Dena Loiland, of Athena, at the blood drive. “It’s a selfless act.”
The first 50 donors at the blood drive hosted by GSHCS at 610 NW 11th Street in Hermiston, received a free admission ticket to the fair.
The American Red Cross has declared a national blood crisis for just the second time in its history due to the ongoing nationwide blood shortage, making donating this summer more important than ever.
“It’s an opportunity to hep others who may need it,” said Princess Morgan Harris, of Echo.
The national blood supply dropped by almost 25% in June and donations are at a four-year summer low, according to the Red Cross.
“This summer, blood donations simply are not keeping pace with hospital demand, and inventories-especially Type O blood-remain under significant strain,” said Chris Hrouda, President of Red Cross Biomedical Services.
Those unable to attend the blood drive are still encouraged to make an appointment to give blood as soon as possible. Donation appointments may be made through the Blood Donor App, by visiting RedCrossBlood.org or by calling 1-800-RED CROSS (1-800-733-2767).
“Every donation has the potential to help save lives, and we urgently need everyone who is eligible to make an appointment to give blood as soon as possible,” said Hrouda.
