PENDLETON, Ore.-The first-ever issue of the “Quill of the Umatilla” literary magazine is set to debut on May 30.

A launch party for the magazine will take place after the Pendleton Friends of the Library’s (PFOL) annual meeting, and will be the first opportunity to purchase a copy of the literary magazine.

The event will include live readings by authors and a panel discussion with the creators featured in the first issue.

“The Library is thrilled to introduce this collection to Umatilla County residents,” said Pendleton Public Library Director Jennifer Johnson. “This community is full of talented creators, some of which will be published for the first time through the Quill.”

54 submissions of fiction, nonfiction, poetry, art and photography were submitted for the inaugural issue of the “Quill of the Umatilla”, and 32 pieces were selected for publication, according to the library.

A selection committee reviewed each submission based on quality, relevance to the topic and originality

“It was a delight to review the submissions for QoU, and I’m very much looking forward to its publication,” said Tyler Johnson, PFOL President and a member of the submissions committee. “It is a notable testament to the immense skill and verve of our community’s authors and artists.”

Desserts and non-alcoholic beverages will be provided at the event, which starts at 5:30 p.m. on in the Vert Clubroom, 345 SW 4th Street, Pendleton.

Registration for the free event is requested and can be completed online through the City of Pendleton.

Copies of the “Quill of the Umatilla” will be available for purchase at the launch party and will be available for checkout at libraries in Umatilla County and for purchase at the Pendleton Library after May 30.
