Washington man killed in Umatilla County crash

UMATILLA COUNTY, Ore.-One person was killed in a single-car crash on I-84 early on the morning of March 29.

Oregon State Police responded to the crash near milepost 190 in Umatilla County around 2:20 a.m.

According to the OSP, the crash happened when a Chevrolet Venture, driven by an 85-year-old Ilwaco, Washington man, lost control while passing other cars on the inside shoulder of a construction zone.

The car entered the median and rolled several times before coming to a stop on the westbound shoulder. The driver, who was not wearing seatbelt, was thrown from the car and died at the scene.

The Echo Fire Department, Stanfield Fire Department, Umatilla County Fire District 1, Umatilla County Sheriff’s Office, and Oregon Department of Transportation all responded to the crash that is believed to have been caused by unsafe passing.

The Oregon State Police Collision Reconstruction Unit (CRU), which is responsible for investigating fatal and critical injury collisions on Oregon’s highways is now investigating.
