Washington’s Tax Exemption for Oregonians Could Go Bye Bye

A new bill that passed in the Washington Legislature could make it more expensive for Oregonians to shop across the border.

If signed by Washington Gov. Jay Inslee, the bill would end the practice of allowing residents of Oregon to purchase items in Washington without paying sales taxes. Instead, Oregonians would pay the tax at the point of purchase, keep the receipt and mail it in to the Washington Department of Revenue – the following year – for a rebate.

  1. Then Oregon needs to be collecting tax from Washington residents who come in for tobacco products, food, groceries, tires, services, etc
